A female walker was airlifted to hospital after falling and breaking her ankle at a puffin colony on the north coast.

She was walking at Puffin Cove – located on the border of Caithness and Sutherland – when she fell.

Injured and unable to make it up the path on her own, she called for assistance around 4.40pm on Monday.

Paramedics were first to arrive on the scene, which is between Thurso and Tongue and is on the North Coast 500 route.

The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway airlifted the injured woman to Wick airport, where she was transferred to an ambulance to Caithness General Hospital in Wick for treatment. Her condition is unknown.

The operation was supported by Melvich and Scrabster Coastguard Rescue Teams, Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Puffin Cove is the home to the UK’s largest puffin colony, with 3500 pairs of puffins being recorded in there in 2019.

It is a small cove where puffins, razorbills and other seabirds go to breed during the summer months.
