Police searching for a wine thief in Thurso found him lying on his back with the bottle in a local street.

Officers who traced Alexander Boy to Traill Street decided to await reinforcements before arresting him, but when these arrived, he began to shout and swear.

Fiscal David Barclay said that it was more of "a drunken rant" rather than anything sinister.

Boy (29) appeared from custody at Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday and admitted stealing the bottle of red wine from the Co-op store in Thurso on Monday and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

Fiona MacDonald said that Boy was subject to various court orders in England and was finding difficulty in coping with them and had decided to travel north.

The solicitor said that the accused had little recollection of stealing the wine and made the point that he could have paid for it as he had plenty of money with him.

Miss MacDonald added that Boy intended to return south to live with his sister in Clampton, Devon.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined Boy £300.
