Traditional Burns suppers may still be few and far between because of continuing concerns over Covid-19 – but local Highland councillor Willie Mackay will be linking up with Scottish enthusiasts thousands of miles away in South America to celebrate the Bard.

Willie will be taking to Zoom to deliver his inimitable 101-line rendition of Holy Willie’s Prayer for the benefit of a group called Escoceses en Argentina, based in Mendoza in the Cuyo region of the country.

It will be the second year in a row that Willie – a huge fan of the works of Robert Burns – has recited Holy Willie's Prayer for an appreciative Argentinian audience.

In January 2021 he was invited to join a virtual Burns night held by a Scottish heritage group in Monte Grande in Buenos Aires.

The Wick provost, who hails from Embo, is well known for performing at local Burns suppers around the time of the Bard's birthday. However, with the ongoing disruption to community gatherings, he has had to adjust to marking the date remotely.

With a three-hour time difference, Willie will be joining the Mendoza group at midnight on Burns Night from his home at Oldhall, Watten.
