Willie Mackay has been reflecting on a summer that saw him miss out almost entirely on his usual busy round of community activities.

The Caithness civic leader had been due to be involved in 21 events over a four-month period in one capacity or another – either helping to organise them, participating, commentating or supporting on the day.

That tally of 21 would have been a record for him – but then the pandemic struck, and from May until the end of August practically every weekend or midweek evening outing in his diary had to be cancelled.

Only the local autocross club managed to get up and running, and Willie was able to attend as commentator on Saturday, July 18.

Willie, a Highland councillor for Wick and East Caithness, said: "This is the first time in 20 years that I have had no involvement in community events across the county and all my weekends curtailed. But I will say it has given myself and my wife Glynis more voluntary time to spend cutting and lifting the grass at four local cemeteries."

The last summer event that Willie compered was the 2019 Marymas Fair in Dunnet, traditionally held on the last Saturday in August. Last year's fair went ahead indoors at the Britannia Hall owing to wet weather.
