ONE of Wick’s longest-established businesses will be closing its doors for the final time this weekend.

After over 160 years of trading, Cormack Jewellers in Bridge Street will cease to trade tomorrow.

The business, which was established in 1850, was originally based in Union Street before moving to its current location.

Proprietor Elaine Henderson bought the business from the Cormack family in 1990 and will officially retire this weekend.

She felt now is the right time to call it a day due to the current economic climate.

"During the last couple of years there has definitely been a slump in the number of customers," she said.

"Jewellers across the country have been experiencing the same problem. The recession has definitely had a big effect as people cannot afford to spend on luxury items as previously.

"We have been able to cope well with the current economic climate, but I feel now is the right time to step down and enjoy my retirement."

The jewellery store will close at 5pm. Mrs Henderson plans to sell the business on to new owners.
