An overnight fall-out with her Orkney partner led to a Wick woman ending up on a drink-driving charge.

Kelly Marie Haven intended visiting him before collecting her dog and returning home.

But after the spat, she decided to spend the night in her car which was parked outside his flat in Kirkwall.

Police became involved after a disturbance around 2.45am on July 5 outside the flats in the Kiln Corner car park in Burnmouth Road, Kirkwall Sheriff Court heard on Thursday.

That resulted in them breathalysing Haven.

The 35-year-old had been due to go to trial on Friday to contest the charge.

But she changed her plea to guilty to driving with a blood-alcohol count of 67 microgrammes, compared with the legal limit of 22mcg.

The court heard that before police appeared on the scene, Haven had operated the car while under the influence.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that while her client had intended to sleep in her car, she "didn't appreciate that she had moved it, albeit a very small movement".

Haven, of Glamis Road, Wick, was put off the road for 16 months but will get her licence back four months early if she completes the accredited drink-driving rehabilitation scheme.

She was also fined £540 and has to pay a victim surcharge of £40.
