Wick weather watcher notes warm Wednesday despite breeze ‘pegging back temperatures’
A local weather pundit highlighted Wednesday (April 30) as having the highest temperature in Wick this year.
Keith Banks said temperatures over many inland and sheltered northwestern parts of Caithness topped a very warm 20C-21C (68F-70F) on Wednesday afternoon.
He added: “However, despite the sunshine, a south-south-easterly breeze pegged back the temperatures along the exposed coastal fringes of the county. Nevertheless, the mercury still hit a warm 18.3C (64.9F) in Wick, making it the town's warmest day of the year so far and also the highest temperature recorded in the burgh for any day in April since that of 2011.”
On April 10, 2011, a temperature of 19.7C (67.5F) was logged. Wick's warmest day for any April is presently 20.2C (68.4F), recorded on April 28, 1987.
“The brief warm spell was caused by a phenomenon meteorologists call a 'Spanish plume'.
“Last April was also exceptionally dry. Indeed, Wick experienced its driest April for 59 years, and the third most dry since 1910. The rainfall total for the month was just 13.6mm (0,54 of an inch).”
He said that the total for April 1966 was 13.2mm (0.52 of an inch.
