Wick Tesco and local mum set the goalposts for Hillhead Play Park

A Wick supermarket and a local mum went over and above to help children score better goals with football nets and more.

A Tesco spokesperson said it started with local mum Alison Calder “putting her time and dedication” into getting nets for children at Hillhead Play Park in Wick where many of them enjoy football.

The spokesperson continued: “Alison approached East End FC and they kindly donated the nets.

“Last weekend, the nets arrived and a few of the local residents helped out by cutting the grass, inserting the nets and even white-lining the pitch. Thank you to Ryan, Shaun, Damon, Derek, Hayden, Colin and Graeme.

“Through Alison’s hard work and commitment, the kids have new nets. After speaking to her we decided to host a mini fun day for this Sunday past.”

Alison also did a collection for East End FC to give something back and thank them for their support. James More came along to the event on behalf of East End FC and accepted the donation.

Karen Center, the Wick Tesco community champion, went along to the event and donated hot dogs, rolls, juice and prizes courtesy of the supermarket.

“Also a thank you to Gordon Plowman for making sausage rolls and to Carol and Jacqueline who came along and helped out for the little fun day that was organised,” said Karen.

“It was a free day for everyone and they held a mini football match, a spin-the-wheel game and ‘play your cards right’ with special prizes.

“It was lovely to see everyone enjoy themselves and kids having fun. Although the weather wasn’t the best, it did not put off our up-and-coming footballers.

“This one is a special one as it was very much a neighbourhood coming together to create a wonderful pitch for the kids to enjoy.”

She added: “Well done Alison for making this happen. Thank you again to all involved.”
