Wick's swimming pool will remain closed until further notice after a chemical spillage at the East Caithness Community Facility on Friday.

High Life Highland, which operates the public leisure centre, said this week it was working to reopen the pool as soon as possible.

Emergency procedures were put in place at the facility after an incident on Friday, which it is understood involved a chlorine leak, with pupils of the attached Wick High and Newton Park Primary schools evacuated.

The swimming pool is used by the schools as part of the campus which opened in April 2017.

A spokesperson for High Life Highland said that most of the site was reopened on Saturday morning, including the library and fitness room.

They added: "We regret that the swimming pool area will remain closed to the public until repair works have been undertaken. We are working closely with partners and contractors to have the swimming pool reopened at the earliest opportunity.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to our customers.”

Some pupils from the two schools were allowed back into the buildings later on Friday to collect belongings, and both schools were reopened on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Highland Council confirmed: "Schools were evacuated as a precautionary measure on Friday, but staff and pupils were safe to return as usual this morning."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said on Friday that the facility was evacuated "as a precautionary measure".

There were no reported injuries.
