Wick is set to be illuminated for the festive season with the switch-on of the town's Christmas lights in the Market Square on Saturday.

Market stalls in the town centre will add to the seasonal atmosphere of Wick Fun Day, while a children's umbrella parade from the riverside will be led by Santa in his sleigh.

Claire Mackenzie, chairperson of Wick Christmas Lights Committee, hopes it will be a welcome return to normality after the Covid disruption of 2020.

"Wick Christmas Lights Committee is looking forward to welcoming everyone to light up our town," Claire said.

"After the last year it's lovely to see some sort of normality return. Alongside us this year is the first community market held by the newly formed Wick Community Market group.

"It will be really nice to see the town centre bustling with people and oozing Christmas spirit. The local shop owners are excited, with many holding special fun day offers.

"Our annual umbrella parade is being held again for all children who want to make a beautiful Christmas brolly. The effort put in and the masterpieces they create are amazing."

Organisers will be keeping their fingers crossed that the weather is not as severe as the forecast suggests, with gales and wintry showers expected in the north during the early part of the weekend.

The umbrella parade is scheduled to start at the boating shed at 3.15pm.
