Wick High School (WHS) announced this morning (March 15) that it is closing due to a heating issue and pupils are being sent home.

The announcement comes after a post on Friday stated that there were problems with the heating and as "a result some classrooms may be cooler than normal and measures to assist staff and pupils who are finding the temperature too low are being taken.".

The bulletin issued at 10.48am today said: "Unfortunately we are taking the decision to close the school today due to a failure in our heating system.

"We will be closing at 11.35am."

It further stated that pupils travelling home by bus will be collected from the bus stop at the following times:

John O'Groats: 10.45am

Watten: 11.30am

Lybster, Berridale and Dunbeath: 10.45am to Dance Studio to await pickup

Bower: 11.30am

"Pupils living in the town will be allowed to make their own way home from 11.35 onwards. If there are any issues with pupils being received at home they are welcome to stay in the building until they can be picked up."

Professor Iain Baikie, WHS Parent Council chair, previously expressed his disappointment over repeated heating, ventilation and structural issues at the five-year-old school.
