Wick’s Laurandy Centre members make poppies and raise charity cash

Elderly members of a day care centre in Wick donated charity money to the local branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) on Wednesday afternoon (November 13).

The Laurandy Centre is based in a World War Two era building near Wick’s airport and its members “wanted to do something different” for Remembrance Day, said its manager Tracy Mackay.

She added: “Instead of our usual outside display, they wanted to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. The ladies suggested knitting poppies to make as brooches.

“The main ladies for the knitting project were Edith Mackay and Joan Farmer, who knitted over 100 poppies between them.”

Tracy continued: “Other ladies from the centre sewed on the buttons and the backings.

“We set up a small display in the centre to highlight the efforts. We raised a grand total of £160.74. The ladies and gentlemen would like to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity.”

Edith said: “It’s a very deserving cause. If it wasn’t for the brave women and men who fought and died for our freedom, what would life be like today?”
