Wick River Campsite named in ‘outstanding sites’ list for UK
Wick River Campsite has been named in a list of 150 outstanding UK camping, glamping and touring sites for 2025.
It is one of only three locations across the Highlands and Argyll chosen by Campsites.co.uk, with the website calling it “the perfect spot to explore the beauty of the Caithness countryside”.
The 150 “reliably excellent” UK sites selected for inclusion range from holiday parks to eco-camping destinations and luxury glamping retreats.
They are described as “a combination of award-winners and other sites that have continually gained excellent reviews and delivered a first-class holiday in the great outdoors”.
The only other two sites from the Highlands and Argyll to be included in the annual list are Barrow Campsite, near Nairn, and Highfield Holidays, Oban.

Martin Smith, the founder of Campsites.co.uk, said: “I’m really pleased to launch our list of outstanding sites for 2025. Every one of these sites is a trusted favourite with our audience and a great choice for your break this summer.”
The latest improvements at Wick River Campsite were showcased at a community open day at the end of June. The site, operated by Wick Development Trust, is now reaching the point where profits can be reinvested in town centre projects.
A new reception building opened this year as the focal point of a £435,000 revamp. That followed on from a £450,000 facilities block which had its official opening in 2024.
The site reopened under the management of the development trust in June 2022 with the long-term aim of putting profits towards local regeneration efforts.
Speaking during the recent open day, development trust vice-chairman Jonathan Miller said: “We’re in for a bumper year – there could be up to 18,000 people through the gate this season.”
Online reviews have described the site as “spotlessly clean”, “fabulous” and “the Hilton of campsites”, with praise for the “friendly, helpful staff”.
