The temporary post office service for Wick is to be replaced by a shop-based location while a permanent solution is sought.
The new post office outlet at the shore end of High Street is scheduled to open on Thursday, January 7, at 11am, and will mean an increase in opening hours. The premises at 125-127 High Street will be open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm
The existing mobile service in the town – provided from a van that visits the riverside car park four times a week – will stop on January 6 at 3pm.
The previous branch in Bridge Street, within the card and gift shop Best Wishes, ceased to trade at the end of October after the resignation of the postmaster.
Post Office Ltd brought in the mobile unit to maintain a service for the town.
David Duff, Post Office Ltd's network provision lead, said: “We are delighted to be improving the opening hours of post office services in Wick while we continue to look for a permanent solution. We want to thank postmaster Glyn Jackson for adding Wick to his mobile post office that already provides a service to many rural communities.
"Glyn adapted his routes to provide as much time serving the Wick community as possible.”
The nearest alternative post offices to Wick are at Watten, Lybster and Thurso.
In October it emerged that businessman Kevin Milkins had expressed an interest in setting up a post office in the town centre. Mr Milkins, who runs Birons Ironmongers in Bridge Street with his wife Dawn, has purchased the former social work building in High Street.
