Born in Wick in June 1935, Jim lived in the county until 1962. He worked as a seaman in the merchant navy until that time before becoming a New Zealand resident in April 1962.

He has been back to Wick in recent times and his old home at 37 High Street has gone – his next-door neighbour was George Harrold who worked for the Groat.

Jim’s grandfather came from England in 1900 and was head gamekeeper for the Duke of Portland at Langwell Estate.

He still gets the odd Groat sent to him by a friend.
