A Wick man who managed to leave the local Tesco branch without paying for two trolley loads of shopping has been ordered to compensate the store.

CCTV captured Steven McPhee (43), of Leith Walk, Wick, leaving the supermarket with the trolleys laden with household goods and groceries, on February 5.

He pleaded guilty to the theft at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday. The court heard that none of the stolen items, valued at a total of £1550, was recovered.

Sheriff Mark Lindsay KC, who heard that the offence was out of character for the accused who is in receipt of benefits and doesn't have an offending record for dishonesty, ordered him to pay Tesco compensation of £400.

It was stated that some of the stolen items were for his partner who was expecting their baby.
