Alexander Newlands offered to sell a car to a man for a bargain price. The only problem was – he didn't own the vehicle!

Newlands (41) admitted pretending to be the owner of the Toyota Aygo and attempting to induce George Williamson, at the caravan park at Upper Quintfall, Lyth, to buy it, on April 7, last year. Mr Williamson runs the park.

David Barclay told Wick Sheriff Court on Thursday that the vehicle was a courtesy car from a garage in Inverness, which Newlands, of Kennedy Terrace, Wick, offered to sell for £500.

The fiscal said: "It looked too good to be true" and added that the two men knew each other and were possibly related.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald described the deal as "a cack-handed" attempt.

Sheriff David Sutherland made Newlands, who has an offending record, subject to supervision for 18 months. He will also require to engage with the Caledonian Programme.
