Wick High School teacher Kevin Costello dies in crash

NORTHERN Constabulary has named the passenger who died in a two-vehicle collision on the outskirts of Thurso as Kevin Costello (47) from Scrabster.

Dr Costello was a physics teacher and head of the science department at Wick High School.

He had been travelling in a red Peugeot motor car which collided with a white camper van on the A9 at Weydale on Tuesday night. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The female driver of the car was taken to Caithness General Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

Rector of Wick High School Thomas McIntyre paid tribute to Dr Costello.

He said: “The whole school community is stunned by the news. Kevin was highly respected and popular among colleagues and friends.

"He was an inspirational teacher who was highly thought of by his pupils.

"He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and sympathy are with Kevin’s family."

Officers from Northern Constabulary’s road policing unit are currently carrying out inquiries into the crash and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
