Parents and carer of pupils at Wick High School have received a letter from Highland Council informing them of a decision to close the school on Wednesday due to strike action.

Highland Council's Education and Learning CEO Nicky Grant stated in her letter that the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) and Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association (SSTA) have given the council notice that their members will be taking strike action on Wednesday, December 7.

"This action is part of a national dispute regarding pay," she said. "The safe supervision of children and young people is of utmost importance and, given that we anticipate significantly reduced numbers of both management and teaching staffing in school a decision has been made to close Wick High School to pupils.

"Apologies for the inconvenience this will cause, however it is hoped that a clear decision will enable you to make plans ahead for the disruption expected."

The CEO added: "While the council has been formally notified by the NASUWT and SSTA of their intention to strike, if there are any developments at a national level, and if strike action is averted in schools this will be notified through the council website www.highland.gov.uk and through our social media, as well as your child’s usual school communication channels."

A BACS payment is to be made for children and young people entitled to a free school meal based on low income (not universal entitlement).

Wick High transport will not operate on this day.
