Wick High School (WHS) posted an update on its website informing parents and carers that it was had achieved Silver Charter status for its work in helping LGBT members feel "safe, supported and included".

The school said it was "delighted" to have been informed by LGBT Youth Scotland last month that it had gained the award.

"To achieve this award the school had to do a variety of work to ensure LGBT members of our community feel safe, supported and included," said this week's WHS bulletin.

It went on to state that WHS was praised for its inclusive policies and visibility within the school.

As part of its Charter journey, members of the WHS LGBTQIA+ Equalities Group worked hard to achieve several different outcomes which included:

  • The creation of a gender neutral language guide for all staff.
  • Consultation on the school’s anti-bullying and dress code policies.
  • Support with P7 transition with visits to Newton Park Primary School to discuss inclusion at WHS.
  • Running an information stall and bake sale during Pride Month to raise money for LGBT Youth Scotland.

Staff took part in LGBT awareness training and developed curricular resources that included examples of LGBT representation and awareness.

To celebrate the achievement, the LGBTQIA+ Equalities Group had a party during their weekly meet-up.

Staff member Marnie Ker, the co-ordinator of the project, explained that the school will now focus on achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award to "ensure that all members of the school community are as safe and included as possible".
