New activities are in the pipeline for Wick Gala Week which looks set to return to normality after being held virtually for two years.

The popular local event is back on the calendar for 2022 and has been scheduled to go ahead from Saturday, July 23, to Saturday, July 30.

New Wick Gala committee chairman Alex Macdonald, explained that he had volunteered to take over the "hot seat" from Anderina Cass earlier this month at a meeting held after the AGM.

"The gala committee are really excited, knowing that we can now go ahead after a two year gap," he said. "We are looking forward to bringing the community back together again and making the gala week a success. It is exciting to get back to some sort of normality."

He added: "We are always looking for people to come forward to help make it a success."

A committee meeting was being held last night to get a programme set up. As well as the normal activities, Mr Macdonald said they were looking at adding some new events to the schedule with plans to do more things outside, if possible.

"We will see how it progresses over the coming months," the new chairman said.

They are just at the early stages at the moment and still unsure of what they will be able to do and what local facilities will be open to them.

It has been decided to give the gala queen and attendants who were elected in 2020 the opportunity to take part this year instead. They are Beth Dunnett, gala queen, with Devin Stuart and Lauryn Miller as her attendants.

Over the past two years, during Covid restrictions, the committee members have managed to run a number of virtual events instead, with a pet show and majorette parade proving popular last year. Scarecrow competitions also saw a large amount of entertaining entries.
