Wick Gala is one of the town’s most popular annual events.

THOSE behind the most-anticipated event in Wick’s calendar are making one last request for volunteers to come forward and make it the best yet.

The Wick Gala Committee will be finalising its programme at its next committee meeting on Tuesday.

Chairwoman Donna Plowman is making a final plea for locals to lend a hand.

The go-ahead of week-long event was threatened in March when only six people turned up to the organisers’ AGM.

An emergency meeting was called when former chairwoman Lorna Ross put out a plea to the public to save the event.

The community responded and over 25 people turned up. Saying a lot of hard work has already gone in, Mrs Plowman stressed the more volunteers who come forward, the merrier the show will be.

"We want to put on a gala where everybody can get involved and leave with a smile on their face," she said.

"The response we received when people heard it was in danger of being cancelled shows you how much it means to this town. There is a great feeling of community in Wick which you don’t get in cities and the gala helps sustain that.

"The money raised helps our attempts to brighten up and improve the town. Everyone will be welcome to come and volunteer at our next meeting and help us make this year’s gala the best yet."

The gala starts on Saturday, July 23, at the Riverside where an It’s a Knockout-inspired event will be held and a fireworks display in the evening.

The meeting takes place at the Assembly Rooms on Tuesday at 7pm.
