In a bid to keep everyone safe Wick Gala Committee have taken the hard decision to cancel this year's event.

This is the second year running that the town's gala will not go ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gala committee chairwoman Anderina Cass said: "The gala takes such a long time to organise and as time is going on we had to make a decision – it was not an easy decision for the committee to make.

"It was decided the safest thing was to cancel this year because of the unknown and trying to keep everyone safe. The gala draws such a big crowd and we do not know what the restrictions will be. It is very difficult to throw together a gala."

The sad decision was made following a great deal of discussion during a recent Zoom meeting.

To keep everyone's spirits up last year the committee organised a number of fun activities through the Wick Gala Facebook page. The events proved popular with loads of photographs sent in for the scarecrow and flowerpot people competition held during the summer.

Window displays and garden competitions were also among the events run, with businesses joining in the fun and taking part in a fancy dress competition on the day the popular gala procession should have taken place.

The committee will have another meeting in the next couple of weeks to see if they will stage some other similar events this year.

"We have all had such a horrible year," added the chairwoman. "It would be quite nice to brighten up the town."
