Football will be the theme of the day in memory of Scott Mackenzie.

THIS weekend will see the return of a popular football tournament in memory of a talented teenager.

The Scott Mackenzie Memorial Tournament will take place at Bignold Park in Wick on Sunday (June 5).

It is being staged in memory of Wick’s Scott Mackenzie who tragically died in a car crash three years ago when he was 17.

A talented footballer, Scott had a promising career ahead of him and was part of the youth set-up at Ross County. The tournament is once again being organised by his parents, Eleanor and Perry, sister, Claire and brother, Perry in conjunction with East End Football Club.

The event, which is now in its third year, has raised close to £20,000 to help youth football in Caithness.

Claire said every year the tournament goes from strength to strength.

"Scott loved playing football and it was a major part of his life," she said. "We wanted to do something in his memory which would help others who enjoy playing football.

"We first held the tournament in 2009 as a one-off fundraiser, but it proved so popular it has now become a major annual event. It is a great opportunity for local youngsters to come and have a kick about while at the same time help raise money for their clubs."

The event kicks off at 10am when tournaments for under-sevens, U9s, U11s, U13s and U15s will take place.

At 4pm, there will be the chance for the veterans to show off their skills when over-35s from Wick and Thurso compete against each other.

The final match will take place at 6pm – Scott’s former team, Staxigoe United, taking on Scotty’s Boys, comprising Scott’s friends and former team-mates.

As well as football, there will be something for everyone with a wide selection of stalls, including candy floss, popcorn, face painting, a tombola and raffles.

Anyone who is able to volunteer running a stall, or would like to donate a prize, can e-mail scottmackenzietournament@yahoo.com for more information.
