A driver who hit 113mph in a 60mph limit on a main road has been fined £2000.

Anthony Adam was also banned from driving for a year, at Wick Sheriff Court this week.

The 44-year-old admitted a charge of dangerous driving.

The court heard that police officers engaged in speed checks on the Stainland straight on the A9 near Thurso, on October 30 last year, had their attention drawn to Adam's "high speed". Their speed gun recorded a reading of 113mph.

David Barclay said that the road surface was wet at the time and there were side roads leading off the main road.

The fiscal said that the officers followed Adam and activated their blue light. The accused immediately slowed down and pulled over. He co-operated fully with their procedures and admitted his guilt at the outset.

Sheriff Vinit Khurana noted that Adam, of Nicolson Street, Wick, had a previous conviction for speeding.

He will pay his fine at the rate of £200 per month and will require to resit his driving test at the end of his current ban.
