Wick man Steven Bruce has been fined £400 after being caught driving his car while uninsured.

A police check in the town's Francis Street just after midnight on June 25 found his policy had expired four days earlier.

Bruce (47), of Waverley Road, pleaded guilty to the charge at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said the JGC worker had not realised his cover had run out.

She said he needs his licence to get to and from his work in Harpsdale.

Sheriff Neil Wilson said he is willing to treat this as an oversight rather than “straight neglect of the law” and would allow him to keep his licence.

As well as the fine, Bruce has to pay a £20 victim surcharge and had eight penalty points imposed on his licence.
