A Wick-born author has released a new book of stories in time for Christmas.

Dorothy Stewart (née Miller) says the collection – Mothers, Daughters, Wives – is a consequence of asking questions.

As she puts it: “Did the Prodigal Son have a girlfriend? And, if he did, what did she think of him taking off like that?

“And what did the mother of the wee boy say when he told her he’d given away his lunch of loaves and fishes and Jesus used them to feed thousands of people?”

Dorothy is a lay preacher in the United Reformed Church and says that all those hours preparing services sometimes produced ideas she couldn’t use in sermons – so this book is the result.

“They’re not all on biblical themes, though quite a few are linked to Christmas,” she pointed out.

“There’s a Nigerian Burns supper – and yes, that one is drawn from real life – and a squabble over a parking space, and a story about a dragon and a unicorn.”

Dorothy lives in Suffolk where she is working on the second book in her Somerset mystery series, which should be released early in 2025.

The first in the series, Loose Ends, came out earlier this year when Dorothy celebrated her 75th birthday with the publication of her 15th book.

Her other works include When the Boats Come Home, set against a backdrop of the herring fleets, and the Mizpah Ring trilogy.

Dorothy was a trainee reporter on the John O’Groat Journal in the 1960s.

Mothers, Daughters, Wives is available at The Gift House, Dempster Street, Wick, and on Amazon, both as paperback and Kindle editions.
