IT was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Wick at the weekend as merrymakers made their way to the annual festive bazaar in the Assembly Rooms.

Santa’s little helpers were hard at work promoting the town’s community council Christmas Lights sub-group as well as a large range of other local businesses offering yuletide gifts – from Caithness Chocolate to art prints from the historic Johnston Collection.

Wick Christmas Lights Committee secretary Doreen Turner said the group was delighted with the turnout. Although down on last year’s total, it still represented great support for the event.

"We were pleased with the bazaar which was our second one and once again a very successful event," said Mrs Turner.

"It enables other organisations and groups to fundraise and we hope it was a good day for them also.

"The public appreciate what we do for the benefit of the town and we are always grateful to them for their continued support."

The two comperes for the day – Marney Bruce and Willie Mackay – kept the event running smoothly and Santa and his helpers were certainly kept busy with youngsters lining up with their wish-lists.

Overall the event showed great community spirit, said Mrs Turner.

"We are a very small group and on days like this, we get help from outside bodies for which we are truly grateful," she said.

"We all pulled together to make this a successful community effort."
