LOCAL musicians dressed as cowboys, ghosts and superheroes took centre stage at the end of Wick’s Pipe Band Week on Saturday.

The annual event once again drew to a close with the fancy-dress parade through Market Square.

As is tradition, members of the pipe band swapped their tartan to entertain the crowd with colourful costumes as well as playing Scottish music.

Collectors for the pipe band, also in fancy dress, were going around the crowds with collecting buckets. It is estimated over £5100 was raised during the week.

Secretary John Bogle, who dressed up as a tiger for the parade, said it is always one of the most popular events of Pipe Band Week.

“The Market Square was packed out with hundreds of people who came to watch us,” he told the Groat.

“The whole week has been good, but Saturday night is always the highlight of the week. Visitors to the area always seem a bit confused to see a pipe band perform in fancy dress rather than our usual uniforms.

“However, people always seem to like it and enjoy the show.”

He added: “The whole week was good and the fine weather always makes a difference to attendance. On Saturday there was a slight downpour in the afternoon and we saw the lightning in the distance, but we escaped the worst of it compared to other events in the Highlands.”

On Saturday several members of Wick RBLS Pipe Band were busking in Market Square playing traditional tunes. In between sets, visitors were entertained by youngsters from the Elise Lyall School of Dance.

There was the usual selection of stalls selling doughnuts, pipe band souvenirs and a bottle stall.

The money raised will be used to cover the running costs of the band and hall in High Street.
