WICK Airport continues to see the number of travellers passing through its doors rise.

Figures released by Highlands and Islands Airports show an increase of six per cent in September, with 2622 passengers. This is compared to 2474 passengers during the same period 12 months ago.

Passenger numbers for the last nine months have also increased significantly with 14,375 passengers flying to and from Caithness, resulting in an increase of 910 from 2010.

HIAL managing director Inglis Lyon said that the results from airports across the Highland are positive.

"I am encouraged to see that the Highlands and Islands economy continues to reap the benefits from increased opportunities," he said.

"That said, there is no doubt that the Highlands is as likely as any other place to be impacted by the ongoing uncertainty in the Eurozone and further afield by the world economic climate over the short, medium and long term. This is something which we will monitor very closely."
