THE new chairman of Thurso Community Council has urged his colleagues to "work together to make the town an even better place to live".

Ron Gunn was speaking after being chosen for the post following the first election of members for more than 20 years.

Eighteen people put their names forward and 13 were elected to serve.

They were Ron Gunn (1330 votes); Gill Arrowsmith (1324); Elspeth Husband (1124); Colin Johnston (1071); Thelma Mackenzie (1057); Daidie Simpson (905); Eric Drummond (844); Bert Macleod (732); Billy Smith (719); James Campbell (620); Louise Smith (619); Ian Wright (616); and Rae Smith (587). Mrs Mackenzie is the vice-chairperson, while Ms Smith is the secretary and Mrs Husband the treasurer.

The community council went into abeyance last October as it did not have the required number of elected members after the resignation of one member.

Mr Gunn said: "Community councillors are local people who care about their town and want to make it a better place to live and work. We are all committed to doing our best for Thurso and our community.

"Individual councillors will take particular interest in a variety of local issues including health, planning and transport.

"We would like to work closely with other groups and organisations in the town and are keen to have representatives from these groups join us as associate members. We also want to hear from our young folk and hope to have representatives from Thurso Youth Club, Thurso High School and other local youth groups.

"We will act for the people in our area and can pass on any concerns the public may have to relevant authorities including Highland councillors, MSPs and our MP.

"We have a few admin things to sort out but we will be holding our first meeting on Tuesday, January 28, in Mount Pleasant school. Our meetings are open to the public and anyone who is interested in what we do is very welcome to come along.

"I hope that in 2020 we can all work together to make Thurso an even better place to live."
