A teenage driver was said to have panicked when he saw a police car signalling him to stop.

Robert Otley accelerated and disappeared, Wick Sheriff Court was told.

It proved to be a costly mistake for the 18-year-old and the provisional licence holder admitted having failed to stop when required by the officers and being unaccompanied by a qualified driver.

The offences occurred on the A836 at the Thurso Business Park, on April 1.

Officers eventually traced the accused to a house in Spittal and he admitted having been the driver of the car.

Otley, of Greystones Farmhouse, Watten, was fined £400 on each charge and banned from driving for four months.

He also incurred six penalty points.

Sheriff Neil Wilson told him: "You made matters far worse by trying to evade justice."
