Watten Scottish Women's Institutes (SWI) met on Thursday, February 2, at the village hall and enjoyed learning some special crafts.

The president, H Campbell, welcomed everybody, apologies from members unable to attend were given, and she then introduced Lucy Wilson who came along to demonstrate some of her crafts.

Secretary of Watten SWI, Edith Battrick, said: "A very interesting and pleasant evening followed where [Lucy Wilson] showed works she had done in pyrography, and was kind enough to invite everybody to have a go. This was followed by wool weaving. Lucy had brought along what seemed like several animal fleeces, along with a completed rug, shoulder bag and cushion.

"She proceeded to weave the fibres of both sheep and alpaca into a very beautiful and interesting fabric. Once again, we all got to try the craft, and found it very relaxing. Lucy followed this by lino printing.

"She had some fantastic prints that she had made into pictures, some in black-and-white, some in colour, and gave detailed instructions and demonstrations on how to make them. She was kind enough to judge the competitions."

The results were: Marmalade Loaf – 1 E Battrick, 2 F Campbell and Hat and Scarf Knitted – 1 E Battrick.

Supper was served by K Mackenzie and the raffle of the evening was won by E Swanson. The vote of thanks was done by E Swanson.
