A troubled Watten man found by police with 25 rounds of ammunition at his home has sought help for the issues in his life Wick Sheriff Court heard this week.

Adam Burrill (43) explained his problems previously in a lengthy letter to Sheriff Neil Wilson who subsequently requested a personal appearance by the accused, who admitted possession of the ammunition.

When Burrill reappeared at Wick on Wednesday, Sheriff Wilson said that he had some concerns about his situation and wanted to ensure that the accused was getting the help he "clearly needed".

Burrill referred to a background report before the court and confirmed he was getting help for "the underlying difficulties" referred to in the document.

Sheriff Wilson said: "I wanted you here today, not to punish you but to ensure that you were getting help. You can understand why."

Burrill replied: "Yes".

Sentence on him was deferred for a year and the accused was advised he would not require to return to court if he was of good behaviour.

The sheriff heard previously that police called at his home in Station Road, Watten, on April 28, last year in connection with concerns for his wellbeing.

Officers found a cache of 20, 7.26 caliber rounds and five, 5.56 caliber rounds which Burrill "should not have had in his possession" as it was contrary to the Firearms Act of 1968 (amended). There were also military service medals in the house.

The ammunition was ordered to be forfeit.
