Travellers on the A882 heading into Watten from the west may think they’ve taken a wrong turn thanks to the efforts of a prankster who changed the village road sign over the weekend.

The sign for Watten was changed to Westfield and Westfield, approximately 17 miles away, has apparently become Watten. Some amount of time would have been needed to take down and attach the signs and anyone witnessing suspicious activities around these areas late on Friday night or early Saturday morning is asked to contact the police.

According to a source on the Watten Community Facebook page a similar incident occurred a few months ago and it is suspected to be the same person or persons behind the prank. “They’re working on getting them swapped back,” added the source.

After being informed of the issue, a Highland Council spokesperson said: “Thank you for raising this to our attention – our roads team are checking this out. We ask anyone with information on this interference with roads signs to report it to Police Scotland on 101.”
