Watch out for Vikings lurking on the Horizons

CAITHNESS Horizons in Thurso is bracing itself for the latest invasion of Vikings as part of Caithness Viking Festival.

Re-enactment group the Glasgow Vikings will be running living history workshops at the museum this week for local primary schoolchildren to learn about the Northmen.

The fun is not limited to children, however, as from July 2-9 the Glasgow Vikings will be living in an authentic Viking village at Sir George’s Park – the Dammies – which will be open to the public from 10am-5pm daily.

There will be weapons demonstrations, storytelling sessions and other living history activities to bring the Viking age in Caithness to life in a fun and interactive way.

At the museum there will be a Viking feast as part of the national Big Lunch campaign, a Viking tavern with live entertainment, art workshops for children and adults with Icelandic artist Kristin Ragna Gunnarsdottir and music workshops for children with Norwegian musician Einar Selvik, the man behind the soundtrack to the History channel’s TV series Vikings.

This celebration coincides with Caithness Horizons being awarded five-star museum status by VisitScotland.
