The cause of many sleepless nights in Watten was resolved today when the rattling cover over a sewer pipe on the A882 was replaced.

Scottish Water workers were employed to cut out the old manhole which was sitting within a depression on the road surface and caused a load clanking noise when vehicles went over it.

The men employed on the project confirmed they had driven up from Invergordon and were employed to replace similar manhole covers in the area. Starting around 10.30am they said that the work was scheduled to take around four hours to complete.

A local resident was delighted to hear that the noisy nightmare was finally over for those living close by. He wrote on social media: "Good! I reported that loose drain a fair few months ago. The noise it made, throughout all hours, I could hear it from 3 houses away and feel through the floor so, great news!"

The Scottish Road Works Commissioner website had said the work was scheduled over three days but the work was completed by early afternoon today and the new cover installed.
