WALKERS at Newton Hill Community Woodland near Wick may be wondering why part of the popular path network has been closed off to the public.

On the north side of the popular walking area, about one mile south of Wick, is a generator hooked up to a nearby electrical pole with strong cabling.

The sound of its engine humming away and "Path Closed" notices are there for a good reason, however, as SSE upgrade the electrical power system in the area.

A spokesperson for SSE said: "The local residents have been contacted and are well aware of the ongoing work to upgrade the HV [high voltage] line in the area. That's why the generator is there and it's nothing out of the ordinary for this type of work."

She went on to say that the equipment ensures that customers in the area "remain connected" as work continues on the upgrade of the high voltage line.

There have been reports of recent power outages in the area but the spokesperson assured it was not connected to the upgrade work.
