WATCH: Fireball meteor explodes over Highlands and Islands skies
Dramatic video footage has emerged of a fireball meteor which streaked across Highland skies in the early hours of this morning.
The stunning fireball - also known as a bolide - was captured on video over the Isle of Lewis at around 12.50am but was also visible across huge swathes of Scotland - with reported sightings also coming in from as far afield as Glasgow, Perth and Stirling.
Fireballs and bolides are terms given to particularly bright meteors that shine brighter than the planet Venus does in the night sky - with bolide also used to describe those which suddenly flare in intensity as they explode and break apart in the atmosphere.
The breathtaking spectacle has sparked a flood of comments from those lucky enough to see it, as well as those of us who missed it but later sure the stunning video footage online.#
Onlookers described a bright orange streak and then a loud bang as it exploded and broke apart under the intense pressures and temperatures reached by objects as they enter our dense atmosphere at high speeds.

People have reported seeing the event across Scotland including on the Isle of Lewis, Stirling, Glasgow and in Argyll and Bute.
Highlands, Islands, Moray and Aberdeenshire Weather was among those to share the video footage of the fireball on their Facebook page, with hundreds of people flocking to comment about the spectacular sight.
