A sheriff has issued an arrest warrant for a man he accused of "treating the court with some contempt".

James Beresford failed to appear at Wick last week to answer an alleged breach of community service.

The 38-year-old was said to have completed only 16 hours out of 100 hours imposed previously at Wick Sheriff Court.

Solicitor Sylvia Maclennan said she had no explanation as to why Beresford, of The Smiddy, Achnavast, by Thurso, wasn't present and added he had not been fit to do the work.

Sheriff Neil Wilson said that he had seen an email from Beresford who said that he was waiting for a keyhole procedure.

Issuing the warrant, the sheriff said he would expect proof of the operation - "more than just statutory excuses".
