The Wick area has been enjoying its warmest day of the year so far with temperatures potentially climbing as high as 18 degrees Celsius.

The change to warmer and drier springtime conditions has come after a cool and very wet spell.

Local weather watcher Keith Banks said: “Following overnight rain, with 8.0mm of rain falling on Wick, clear skies and unbroken sunshine, coupled with a broad west-south-westerly airflow that is currently feeding a warm air mass originating from the subtropical regions of the North Atlantic near the Azores across the British Isles, the thermometer has readily responded.

“The temperature in Wick at 2pm had soared to 16.3C (61.3F). The daytime average for April in Wick is about 10C (50F).

“The Föhn effect has increased the likelihood of the temperature reaching 17C (63F) and perhaps even nudging 18C (64F) in Wick, together with other favoured locations to the lee of the Highlands, before the end of the afternoon.

“Temperatures in Wick today [Thursday] are the highest recorded since last September, and provisionally today is the warmest day for any April in Wick since 2018.

“Yesterday the highest temperature in Wick was just 8.5C (47.3F).”
