Community-minded workers from Vulcan have given a helping hand to the Seafarers Memorial Group ahead of the unveiling of Wick's new statue later this month.

Group chairman Willie Watt, who has been busy preparing the Braehead site for the memorial to lost seafarers from or in the WK registration area, was delighted by the assistance provided by the Rolls-Royce team who helped to clean up the surrounding paths.

Mr Watt said: “Whilst I was working at the foundations of the Seafarers Memorial for the impending arrival of the statue, Allan Bruce and his band of community-spirited helpers from Rolls-Royce appeared to help clean up the surrounding paths at the Braehead.

"I was taken by surprise at this spontaneous effort by the team from Vulcan to help with the project. Their efforts were significant and have made a huge difference to the area.

"I can honestly say that there are few places on Earth that see such amazing levels of support from local businesses, members of the public and the local council and it is very humbling when faced with such generosity. Well done to the volunteers from Rolls-Royce and to everyone who is making this memorial happen – the Seafarers Memorial Group is very grateful indeed.”

The group raised more than £100,000 for the sculpture which will have its unveiling ceremony on the afternoon of Saturday, May 20.

Sculptor Alan Beattie Herriot was selected last year to create a bronze figure that will symbolise how the sea "gives with one hand and takes away with the other". The statue will stand on top of a stainless-steel base plinth surrounded by five lecterns and two bench seats.
