More than 20 volunteers turned out in Wick for the first of three litter-picking sessions as part of Spring Clean Scotland 2023.

They met up at the town's old herring mart on Sunday morning and covered an area out to the South Head.

The Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council is leading the initiative locally with support from Wick Paths Group.

Organiser Allan Bruce, vice-chairman of the paths group and a member of the community council, said: "It was a great start to the series of litter-picks that we are holding during Spring Clean Scotland.

"Thanks to members of Wick Paths Group and everyone else that turned out to help on the first one – 17 adults, five children and a dog came along.

"Part of this first litter-pick was covering an area we did last year as we were keen to see if there had been an improvement. We all agreed that it wasn’t as bad as last year but would encourage people to purchase a bin hook.

"This certainly helps if a wheelie bin blows over, in particular your blue recycling bin. These hooks are available to purchase from the Seafarers Memorial Group."

The second litter-pick is scheduled for this Sunday (March 26), covering the airport industrial estate area. Volunteers will meet at 10am in the car park behind Sutherland Brothers' premises.

Wick's final event is on Sunday, April 16, meeting at the riverside car park opposite the Norseman Hotel, again at 10am.

Spring Clean Scotland 2023 is being run by Keep Scotland Beautiful from March 17 until April 17. The environmental charity warned of a “litter emergency” across the country as it appealed for as many people as possible to take part.
