VOLUNTEERS from the community action group Pay it Forward Thurso are again preparing to bring some festive cheer to those who deserve it most.

They will be serving up a Christmas Day meal under the banner of Thurso Community Christmas 2019, to be held in Thurso Youth Club.

The meal is provided for those who may not be receiving visitors this year, are perhaps struggling a little or would just like to spend December 25 with others in the community. Arrival is from 2pm and the meal, cooked by volunteers, served at 3pm.

Joan Lawrie, who has organised the event over the past two years, said: “It is a very special day – I wouldn’t spend my Christmas any other way now. We are very fortunate to have a chef who volunteers to lead the cooking and the rest of us all pitch in with vegetable peeling and making puddings.

"Volunteers are very welcome and they all also sit down to eat with those attending making for a very warm, welcoming, family community Christmas.”

The group is fundraising for the event. Online donations can be made through JustGiving (www.justgiving.com/campaign/ThursoCommunityChristmas2019) and a collection tin is available in Thurso’s Eye Candy gift shop.

Joan explained: “Obviously we fundraise to help supply the meal, although we also receive donations of food. But we like to supply everyone who attends with a small gift. Even if you can’t help with a monetary donation, a small gift would be most welcome.

"We do try not to take donations of food as it can lead to waste if we get too much of one thing. We’ve been fortunate in past years to be able to borrow a large amount of kitchen equipment. This isn’t available to us this year so we would like to purchase some large pans and a soup kettle, dependent on donations.

"If we can raise the additional funds for this we intend on holding more of these community meal events throughout the year.”

Anyone is welcome to attend the meal but booking is essential. Those otherwise alone, families and couples can all go along and join in on the day. No fee is charged for the meal but if those attending would like to make a discreet donation that is welcomed.

Transport can be arranged for those in Thurso or the immediate surrounding area. If you know someone who you think might benefit from attending the meal, get in touch with Joan and she will arrange for an invitation to be sent.
