A WICK-based dance school has been very active over the lockdown period with an online competition and a special online gala parade.

Marrellian Majorettes hosted a virtual lockdown twirling competition at the end of June and now follow this success with a virtual majorette gala parade to be posted online on July 25.

Coach Carrie Mackay said: "As there will be no Wick Gala this year we understand that a lot of majorettes enjoy taking part in the parade.

"We now plan to put together a Virtual Majorette Gala Parade."

Entries for the parade have been sent well in advance so routines can be arranged to suit all the abilities from first pre-school class to adults.

The various routines will be filmed this week to form online videos to be posted on the evening when Wick Gala's street parade was due to take place on Saturday, July 25.

Carrie said: "We will issue videos of the routines online so that the girls can practise at home. Depending on the restrictions in the coming weeks, we may be able to meet with small groups outside to practise and film. If this is not possible nearer the time filming would need to be done at home."

The well-established dance school also held an online twirling competition with entries received from throughout the UK and ages ranging from two to 30-plus years.

Competitors submitted video entries which were then passed to the judges.

"This competition is usually held locally in Wick but due to the current circumstances it was decided to hold it virtually and extend an invite to twirlers from all over Britain," Carrie explained.

She said it proved to be a great success and plans are already under way to hold another in the future.

Overall trophies were awarded in each age group, with six out of 10 remaining in Caithness.

"During lockdown we have been doing lots of online challenges with the girls," Carrie said. "The girls long to get back to class as normal."
