Village’s huge poppy display ‘for all those from Caithness who died in the war’

Remembrance efforts in London inspired one Caithness community to display a giant tribute to more than 1300 people from the county whose lives were lost in the two world wars.

Caithness Community Connections has installed a poppy display in Latheron to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day on Thursday.

The display includes 1308 individual poppies placed in the ground – with one poppy for each service personnel in Caithness who gave their life during World War I or World War II.

It also has Latheron's usual Remembrance display strung in amongst the fallen.

Project co-ordinator Heather Urquhart said: “We got the idea when we saw the Tower of London putting their ceramic poppies back on display for the 80th anniversary, and we hope they cause individuals to reflect on the sacrifice made by so many.

“Over 1000 Caithnessians lost their lives in World War I – a very sobering thought when you consider the size of the population at the time.”

Anyone interetsed in getting involved with their craft group which made the poppies can contact Heather on 07885 295264 or message the Caithness Community Connections Facebook page.
