THURSO could become known as the bumblebee capital of the UK following the launch of a drive to save one of its rarest species.

Thurso: Gateway to the Great Yellow, is a three year project by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to make Thurso known as the first Great Yellow Bumblebee town.

The Great Yellow is one of the UK’s most endangered bumblebees and Caithness is one of only two mainland counties in the UK where it can still be found.

The project aims to raise awareness across Caithness about the species and increase conservation action in the far north.

A public consultation into the project was launched by Scottish Parliament’s Great Yellow champion, Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart in Thurso on Monday.
