In what could become a new trend, a Wick man proposed to his partner underneath the all-new archway feature that was officially opened last week at John O'Groats.

Hugh MacDonald and Carol Harrower went to John O'Groats to enjoy a wildlife cruise around the Pentland Firth looking for puffins and orcas if they happened to be in the area.

Hugh took a picture of Carol underneath the new arch at John O'Groats and then asked her to take a shot of him.

Carol, who comes from Alness, said: "My partner's from Wick and runs Hugh's Taxis. Anyway, we put our jackets on when we got out [the vehicle] and then spotted the archway."

Last week, a new sculpted feature was officially opened in the village – a gateway arch marking the start and end of the walking trail at John O'Groats.

"Hugh asked to take my photo then gave me his phone to take his. When I was ready to take it he was down on one knee, and asked me to marry him."

Capturing the moment forever in a snapshot, Carol said she had no idea Hugh was going to propose but was sure of her decision on the matter – a resounding "yes".

"Then we went on the cruise which was brilliant," added Carol. "When we got back into the harbour we put our jackets in his minibus then celebrated with ice cream and had a look around the shops."

It was in one of the craft shops at John O'Groats that Hugh bought Carol a special engagement ring that she will forever cherish, a Celtic knot. A very fitting selection for a couple tying the knot.
