The Beauty House in Castletown and the Country Spa, near Lybster, have both been put forward for the Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards which are being announced tonight.

Owned by Carey Henderson, the Beauty House has been short-listed in the Best Hair and Beauty Salon category of the 2021 awards which should have gone ahead last December, however due to Covid they were postponed until February.

Carey (33), a beauty therapist, will be attending the presentation ceremony – being held in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, in Glasgow – along with three others who work at the salon.

The Castletown business is one of four salons put through for the area covering north and west of Scotland. They are up against CC’s Hair, Tain, Cut Above, Portree and The Strand, of Fort William.

Excited about the awards, Carey said it was the first time her business had been nominated. She first worked at the salon in Castletown's Main Street when it was called B'Dazzled, but changed the name when she took over just over three years ago.

"I was working there and then the owner decided to sell the business so I took over the beauty side, then I recently took over the hair," she explained. "The hairdressers are self-employed. We are really busy and doing really well."

Commenting on the awards Carey said: "A client nominated us – I've got a feeling who it was, but I don't really know. It was a massive surprise."

A total of eight people work at the Beauty House, which as well as offering hairdressing also provides a wide selection of beauty treatments, including nails, waxing, facials, tanning and massage. Carey hopes to introduce microblading soon as well.

The local beauty therapist started her training at the North Highland College in Thurso at the age of 16, and then went on to be a lecturer there for a while.

Meanwhile the Country Spa has been put forward for the Most Loved Salon of the Year category along with nine other businesses mainly from the central belt.

Owner Katrina Sutherland had not realised she had been put forward for the awards and said: "It is a nice surprise. It is a tremendous honor to be nominated for the Most Loved Salon of the Year and we can only thank our customers profusely.

"I would also like to acknowledge my wonderful team because they are the ones delivering the excellent service. I am glad the customers enjoy what we do and will continue to work hard to exceed their expectations.

It is a real honour to be considered a finalist regardless of whether we win or don't when we feel like winners."

Katrina is in the process of entering the Professional Beauty Awards, UK, in the large salon category.

Hosted by Creative Oceanic, this is the tenth official Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards. They have become the leading celebration of the hair and beauty professionals that operate in the country.

The ceremony promises to be a night to remember, dedicated exclusively to those who work tirelessly to make clients look their best by following the latest trends and creative techniques.
