Two days of ‘fun and action-packed activities’ for Caithness-based canoe club members
Fourteen members from the Pentland Canoe Club (PCC) recently attended an “inspiring” Paddle Scotland two-day annual Club Volunteer Conference.
This annual event, which is run in partnership with SportScotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre at Glenmore Lodge, is designed to support people involved in the running of clubs, including committee members, aspirational leaders and coaches. A key focus of the conference was on safety and skill development in various paddling disciplines and environments.
Gary Youngson, the club chair, commented: “This was a fantastic gathering of like-minded paddlers from all over Scotland to experience two days of fun and action-packed activities with access to some talented coaches from around the country. It was great to have a good representation at the event by some of our volunteers, who all gained skills and knowledge from being there.”
During the weekend, the PCC members participated in several workshops and courses. This allowed them to develop their skills and knowledge in sea kayaking, river kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and open canoeing. Additionally, some members were also able to complete certified safety and leadership training courses.
Yvonne Pollard, who attended the conference for the first time, said: “The event was fantastic with brilliant coaching held at an excellent facility. The weekend provided an opportunity to paddle in new areas and meet paddlers from across Scotland. The evening talk on a 500-mile Nordkapp sea expedition was inspiring.”
